Goal: Support your child in recognising emotional triggers—situations or experiences that spark strong feelings—and begin understanding their emotional responses.

Materials Needed:

  • Printable Trigger Tracker worksheet

  • Pencil or pen

  • Optional: Emotion Wheel or Word List (included at the bottom of the worksheet)

Instructions:

  1. Sit down together with the worksheet and emotion list. This is a shared reflection activity.

  2. Read aloud some common emotional triggers. Examples could include:

    • Someone teased me

    • I had too much homework

    • I got left out

    • A teacher raised their voice

    • I was running late

    • Loud noises or busy spaces

  3. Have your child circle or highlight the triggers they’ve recently experienced.

  4. For each selected trigger, they will:

    • Draw or write the emotion they felt (e.g., angry, anxious, embarrassed)

    • Add a reaction (what they did) and what they wish they did instead

  5. At the bottom, they can choose 1 trigger and create a “Calm Plan”—a go-to strategy for the next time this trigger happens.

Discussion Prompts (for Parents):

  • “When this happened, how did your body feel?”

  • “What would you like someone to say or do when you feel this way?”

  • “Can you think of a better way to handle this next time?”

  • “Is this a trigger that happens often, or just sometimes?”
