Goal: Help students identify healthy coping strategies and personalise their own “toolbox” to use when feeling overwhelmed, anxious, sad, or frustrated.
Materials Needed:
Printable Coping Skills Toolbox worksheet
Pencil or colouring materials
Emotion word list or emotion wheel
Scissors and glue (optional if using cut-and-paste strategy cards)
Instructions:
Begin with a class discussion:
“When we feel upset or overwhelmed, what helps us feel better?”
Make a list of examples on the board.Distribute the worksheet. It includes:
A toolbox template (outlined box where students can “fill” their tools).
A menu of coping strategies with words and simple images (e.g., listening to music, stretching, counting to 10, deep breathing, journaling, drawing, talking to a friend, drinking water).
Space for students to draw or write their top 5 coping tools inside the box.
Encourage students to colour in their coping tools and decorate their toolbox.
Optional: Use strategy cards that students can cut and paste into their toolbox or create their own.
Discussion Prompts:
“What’s one tool you’ve used before that worked really well?”
“What can you do at school when you're upset and can’t use some tools from home?”
“Is there a tool you’d like to try that you haven’t before?”
Optional Add-Ons:
Create a classroom calming station and encourage students to place a copy of their toolbox there.
Use it as part of a reflection journal where students track which tools worked each week.
